Play it Cool was a project funded
by DEFRA (Department for Farming and Rural Affairs) which sought
to raise awareness of the impacts of climate change and help schools
and
communities to respond. Project funding ended in March 2008.
Play it Cool offered schools
in North Devon & Torridge
free training for both teachers and pupil educators and provided
speakers for schools and public events. The project also offered
tailor made classroom sessions
for both primary and secondary schools.
The project sought to empower pupils to
help their peers and colleagues learn about ways to respond to the challenges
posed
by
climate
change. Teams of 'pupil educators' were trained to work with their peers
because:
- Pupils learn more information and learn it better when they have to
teach it
- Pupils are often more interested in hearing what other
pupils have to say
- Secondary students teaching primary pupils often benefit from the "cool" factor
- They usually build in a lot of fun and primary children enjoy the
lessons
- Pupil educators gain in confidence and ability in making
presentations
- Students also like practicing their IT skills and this
is helpful,
provided they don't take attention away from content!
The Play it Cool website has now closed.
