Here is our exciting new programme of events for the Summer! Highlights include “The
Pride, the Prejudice,” a rare opportunity
to explore the lives of Devon’s Romany Gypsies. As part of our Coping with
Conflict project, we will also present the Oscar-winning drama “No Man’s
Land,” a journalist’s darkly humorous take on the role of the UN
and the media in the Balkans conflict.

Regular events
The World At Lunch
Held every Thursday between 1-2pm.
Every Thursday lunchtime, the Global Centre hosts World at Lunch,
a chance to share views on current events in a friendly
atmosphere while you eat your lunch. This term we have several World
at Lunch Specials, including Global Centre
staff
Matt
Partridge and Sharon Tanner’s talk on their recent experiences in Mali
and a practical session on the ancient craft of Felt-making.

How to get involved as an 'active citizen' in a myriad of ways: your power
to influence local and national decisions and help build stronger communities.
Black and Minority Ethnic Networking
Lunches
Monthly meetings for Black and Minority Ethnic people in which they can
enjoy a relaxed atmosphere of food & discussion.

Gown meets Town
These sessions give Devon residents the chance to meet Exeter University postgraduate
students and staff who bring new insights into local
and international issues with a series of talks and discussions. This term's
sessions included an introduction to the history and contemporary life of
Tajikistan, an ancient Central Asian country, which has been part of the Persian,
Arab,
Mongol and
Russian empires and a talk about the growth of government-owned
investment institutions, and the anxieties around their impact on economies
in the West.
Global Book Club
A chance to read and discuss a selection of international fiction and non-fiction.
Some copies of books discussed may be available for loan from the Global
Centre.

Raja Shehadah: Palestinian Walks
A moving personal look at how the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has damaged the
natural beauty of the West Bank.

Oscar winning film looking at the role of the UN, the media and human nature
in finding solutions to conflict. Part of the Coping

Join us to review the year and celebrate our
achievements. The evening will have a French flavour to
celebrate Bastille Day.

Events to support the global
dimension in education
The Global Centre can help to bring the world into the classroom. We have
a
collection of teaching resources about global
issues as well as artifacts that are unrivalled in the South West. Come along
to see how these can help bring
the global dimension alive in schools and other places of learning.

Citizenship Conference:
Supporting best practice across the new primary curriculum
A professional development day for primary teachers
in Devon, Plymouth and Torbay.

The focus will be the Rose Review. The
programme includes a keynote speech by Alan Dyer, Associate Director of Plymouth
University's
Centre for Sustainable Futures, followed by an overview of the Rose Review,
presented by Dr Fran Martin, of Exeter University School of Education.
Dr Martin has been an adviser to the review process.
Six teachers will then run practical workshops to explore the opportunities
and possibilities of the new curriculum, providing ideas for participants
to
take away - and use.

Regular sessions are held at the Global Centre for teachers and
others interested in the global dimension in education. All sessions are free
of charge, but donations are welcome.
