Here is our exciting new programme of events for the
Spring. In a typically varied programme highlights this Spring include
best-selling author John
Madeley discussing his latest book, a chance to explore Shiatsu, discover
the real St Patrick and answer the question: why dont we care about our Navy
any more?! And of course,
there's
Fairtrade Fortnight.

The World At Lunch
Held every Thursday between 1-2pm.
A chance to share views on current events in a friendly atmosphere
while you eat your lunch.
Special features this Spring include:
Living Under Occupation: a Village on the Edge
14th January
Ecumenical Accompanier Sharen Green tells stories
from Jayyous, a Palestinian community which has lost 75% of
its land.
Shiatsu Mind-Body Works
11th February
Experienced Shiatsu Practitioner Sandhya Dave will show how this
simple body-work practice from Japan can be a powerful tool in
maintaining health and well-being, while allowing you to live
in a sustainable way. All ages and abilities welcome.
Lá Fhéile Pádraig (St Patrick’s Day)
18th March
Will the real St. Patrick please stand up? A sideways glance at
the original Green movement with Irish Cultural Champion James Ellis.
Gown meets Town
These sessions give Devon residents the chance to meet Exeter University postgraduate
students and staff from Exeter University who bring new insights into local
and international issues with a series of talks and discussions.
Post-election Afghanistan: Issues and Challenges
Tuesday 19th January, 7pm
PhD student Timor Sharan will show how
complex political, ethnic and social relationships
in Afghanistan affected the recent elections.
It Must Have Been Something He Ate: Food Additives, Hyperactivity
and the Feingold Diet
Tuesday 23rd February, 7pm
Matthew Smith, Wellcome Trust Research Fellow, examines Dr Feingold’s work
on the relationship between additives and hyperactivity. Was Feingold
actually right? Were his opponents politically motivated?
The Royal Navy and British National Identity
Thursday 25th March, 7pm
Why don’t the British care about their Navy anymore? Dr Duncan
Redford examines how
our identity has affected how we view the Navy.
Global Book Club
A chance
to read and discuss a selection of international fiction and non-fiction.
Some copies of books discussed
may be available for loan from the Global Centre.

Louise Winstanley spent 2 years volunteering
with Peace Brigades International in Colombia, and Dan Slee is
volunteering from March.
The Sun of Wisdom in the Tale
Thursday 4th February, 7pm
Storyteller David Heathfield and oud-player Fadi Alnaji take us
on a caravan of Middle-Eastern tales through blinding sandstorms
and delicately perfumed
gardens to reveal the vices and virtues that bind humans together.
Tales and songs from the floor welcome.
Fundraising event for the
Global Centre.

Events to support
the global dimension in education
The Global Centre can help to bring the world into the classroom. We have a
collection of teaching resources about global issues as well as artifacts that
is unrivalled in the South West. Come along to see how these can help bring
the global dimension alive in schools and other places of learning.
Events for teachers and teaching assistants
Regular sessions are held at the Global Centre for teachers
and others interested in the global dimension in education. All sessions
are free of charge, but donations are welcome.
International Schools Award meeting
Wednesday 27th January, 2pm
David Weatherly (Devon adviser) leads this session
providing inspiration and direction to schools on the ISA process.

Global Education in Partnership
Tuesday 9th March, 10am-4pm
Free Continuing Professional Development (CPD) workshop for all
schools that have a partnership with a school outside Europe.
