The
Annual Report July 2007
‘This is one
of the most innovative and exciting community projects to be found
in the South West… Through its activities, it is a key player in
Devon in celebrating cultural diversity and challenging injustice,
both of which it does energetically and enthusiastically.’

So here we are at the end of the 3rd
year in the life of the Global Centre Devon, and 11th for Devon
Development
Education
(DDE).
It
has been very busy – and successful. However, some things
don’t change – we are still in Exeter Community Centre,
but still uncertain about the future of these premises. We have
worked hard with success, yet we are still struggling financially!
But other aspects of our work and existence have changed for the
better. We have a developed a good team at the Global Centre
- 6 staff (all part time, working different days) and 2 core volunteers,
who have been with us for over 2 years, plus a good number of
reliable
volunteers – for it is clear that volunteers like to volunteer
at the Global Centre! And just as important is the fact that our
financial systems and procedures are now good.

WANTED! Your global resources
The Global Centre is searching for objects and artefacts from countries
overseas to use in artefact
boxes
for use
in
schools. Other items will be sold in October, as gifts for Christmas,
to help with our fundraising drive at the Global Centre. So, please
let us have any artefacts which you no longer need or would like to
donate to this good cause.
Please bring them to us at the Global Centre, or phone us on 01392 438811.
Please also give us as much information as you can about the objects
(where it came from, what it is made from, what it is used for etc).
Thanks!
Model United Nations Assembly
The Global Centre organised a highly successful
Model United Nations Assembly to debate the crucial issues
of climate
change and the Millennium Development Goals. The conference
was supported by the Exeter branch of the United Nations Association
and Devon County Council who enabled the event to take place
in the Council Chambers at County Hall.
The MUN is a simulation of the United Nations.
Participants take on the role of delegates from countries, who
are
members of the United Nations. A radical resolution involving
contraction and convergence was agreed by all but two countries represented.

Membership of the Global Centre
As you may know, our grant funding is
never enough to cover our costs, and we depend on donations and fees
to bridge
the
gap.
For
a mere £10
a year membership fee you can borrow books and resources from our excellent
collection, use the photocopier and the computer, and know that your
money is helping to keep us going. You can also go the next step, and
support us with a one-off donation or a standing order.
Global Learning Award 2006
The Global Centre was awarded the prestigious Global Learning Award 2006.
Doug Bourn, director of the Development Education Association said
when awarding us
the Global
Learning Award: “Key
to building awareness and understanding of development is giving people
the space and opportunities
to discuss and learn about how global issues relate to their everyday
lives and personal experiences. The work of Devon Development Education's
Global Centre provides this through a supportive learning environment
and is therefore an excellent example of community based development
education practice.” For details of the award click here
