The Cause
Please sponsor Chris Sargeant on this arduous 100 kms bike ride over Dartmoor. Every £100 raised will pay for one Ugandan Primary School Teacher to attend a 3-day training course in sustainable organic agriculture at Kulika’s Training Centre. The teachers will pass on these skills to their pupils, to use at school and home. Teachers will also aim to grow food at school, so that pupils can eat porridge every day. This is part of the Food for Thought programme of Devon Development Education. The project, which is becoming ever more effective and successful, links primary schools in Devon, Plymouth and Cornwall with very rural primary schools in three districts of Uganda.
The Race
The Dartmoor Classic Sportive is an annual cycle ride, organised and run by Mid-Devon Cycling Club. The event with a sell-out field of 4,000 riders is widely recognised as one of the most prestigious open-road Sportive’s in the UK, attracting cyclists from around the world!
Chris will be doing the Medio route – the middle-distance option. The route starts with a 2.3 mile neutralised segment from Newton Abbot racecourse to Clay Pits Way. Here his official ride time will begin. After scenic climbs through Dartmoor, at 30 miles he will arrive at the famous Princetown Feed station. 10 miles on from Princetown, at 40 miles is the Closed Road Hill climb segment. After completing 64 miles he will return to the Newton Abbot racecourse where he will receive his well-earned medal.
The Rider
For the last four years Chris Sargeant has undertaken the arduous Dartmoor Classic bike ride, relishing the views, the camaraderie and the challenge of the climbs, often despite head winds and rain which slow him down.
Having taught in a UK school linked to a Ugandan one, he has some idea of the challenges faced by teachers and pupils alike in Uganda. The Garden Teachers help schools to grow their own food to feed pupils, actively involving the children, who often pass on knowledge to their families, increasing their independence. Well-fed children learn better.
