Christmas Appeal 2020: please can you help?
Seeds, suckers and training in sustainable agriculture
Thanks to the many generous donations for the Christmas Appeal, so far, we have received a total of £2700. This will provide training for 77 families. Before Christmas Beatrice Okumu worked with 20 families and their neighbours, and Godfrey Kisakye with 10 – see these reports from Beatrice and Godfrey
More families will be trained during the next few months - so it is not too late to donate. Beatrice and Godfrey have made sure to include young people and young women in the training sessions.
DDE’s Hunger in Uganda Appeal for food parcels in August and September helped 330 families. Now Beatrice and Godfrey are thinking longer-term and wish to provide training in sustainable agriculture for some of these families.
Each family will receive a ‘Re-Starter Kit’ to implement the training, and so be better able to survive another drought or more pandemic restrictions. The Re-Starter Kit for each family will provide:
- 1 bag of cassava cuttings. Cassava is a good food security crop
- 10 banana suckers. A permanent crop, requiring limited husbandry once established
- Kale and cabbage seeds, excellent sources of nutrition
- 5 sacks to create bag gardens
- 2 farming tools: an African hoe and a panga.
- Two half day training sessions
The cost is £35 per family.
Cheques should be payable to ‘Devon Development Education (Christmas Appeal)’ and sent to us, c/o Sue Errington, 4 Acacia Mews, Kennford Devon, EX6 7TZ, or make a donation by BACS (a/c: Devon Development Education, s/c 08-92-99, a/c no. 65173134).
We will send you a receipt for each donation. If you wish to give this as a Christmas gift, we will send greetings to your family or friends, with information about your gift to them.
